Music in Our Schools Month Concert

Using our usual areas of assessment (tone, intonation, rhythm, technique, musicianship, etc.), discuss how you feel you MOST contributed to our performance and also discuss the area where you would like to make the most growth before our next performance.  The two areas must be DIFFERENT.
Guidelines:
Post your response by THIS Friday, 3/20.
Clearly state which area you are discussing--tone, intonation, rhythm, technique, or musicianship.
Use at least TWO specific examples from our concert music to show us how you contributed in the area you selected.
For your area of growth, include TWO ways you feel you can achieve your goal before the next concert.  (Please note: “practice” is not an acceptable answer, because that is a given.  HOW are you going to practice?  What resources can you seek to help you reach your goals?  What questions do you have about your plan?)
Before next Wednesday (3/25), read everyone else’s responses and respond to two of them with cheerleading and/or practice tips based on their selected area of growth.  Respond to someone who has not received a response yet so everyone can receive some feedback.

Optional:  You may include reflections on Symphonic Band's performance as well.

Be respectful in your comments and interactions with others.

  1. I think during the concert I contributed most to the tone. I tried really hard throughout the concert to focus really hard on my tone. I focused the most on my tone during Irish tune from county Derry. Also in Irish tune I was really focused on nailing my entrances. I would like to improve more on my rhythms and technique for our next concert because there were some areas in which I struggled with rhythms. I think regular practice with my instrument will help achieve my goal but also if I extend my smart goal, which is rhythms, past the given deadline and continue to practice specifically on them it should help me reach my goal really fast.

  3. What I did well: Rhythm
During Florentiner, I had articulated the ending really well. During Vesuvius, I had played out at 217 to change from the relaxing part to the intense part.

What I should work on: Good audience member
During Symphonic Band, I had been talking with people. Next time, I will sit next to somebody that I won't be tempted to talk to. While Varsity Band members were introducing the pieces, I hadn't been paying attention. Next time, I will not be rude to those people.

  4. I think our concert went SUPER well and we sounded very very good. Personally, I have been working on my technique and interpretation of the music/style to make the audience really feel the music. I feel like I contributed most by making sure that I knew my solos really well. Before the next concert, my goal is to change my sound to sound more mature and full.

    5. I actually know of a horn teacher who has his students make up a story to try and portray with each piece. If you want to try for expression and making the audience feel the music I would recommend coming up with a detailed story for the piece. Students of his say it works quite well.

  5. During the concert I feel like I contributed most in rhythm. I took some time outside of class to iron out the tricky spots, and I tried to become a steady leader in rhythm for my section. For example, in Vesuvius I really had my head in the game for all the counting, and was consistent for all of the entrences. Also, in Sheperd's Hey I tried to keep driving forward with the rhythm while being as precise as possible. I feel like I could grow most in intonation. I could get better at this by continuing to practice pitch bending like my private teacher has been helping me with. Also, I could tune myself before the concert instead of having to rely on group tuning.

    3. I'm sure it was hard to find ways you could improve here but I commend you for taking the initiative of deciding to do some self-tuning; your intonation always sounds great to me but it is amazing to see you wanting to get even better and push the limits of how great you can truly be. Your french horn family is so proud of you, our flawless child <3.

  6. The areas in which I feel I contributed the most during this March concert would be with my intonation in Irish tune and with my technique in Florentiner. I feel as if I played both of these pieces the way they were written and meant to be preformed. Using the right quality and the correct dynamics made the music come to life in both of the pieces. However, I feel as though I could improve greatly on my quality and accuracy of my notes, along with being as musical as I can when playing whatever it is I am playing. Working to achieve these goals might look something like warming up each day with a purpose and with good air quality, using the air I would use when preforming for a live audience. I thought we played really well at this concert :)

  7. I felt like i contributed to the performance by really studying the music to make sure I played the correct articulations and rhythms. In florentiner the trombones executed the 16th note soli very well, and in Vesuvius we also played the quick 8th notes in the erruption with good articulation. Next concert I could be more energetic in the music and really get into the mood of the piece. I could also look at a little bit of the history of the piece so that I could not only play the piece but play in the theme and play to the setting of the piece.

    1. For once I could actually hear the piccolo during Shepherd's Hey. Great job!

  8. During the concert I feel that I contributed most to the balance and blend of the ensemble. This comes naturally as a low brass member because we account for the entire foundation of the group. This was huge in Irish Tune because of the dynamic variation and character of the piece. I also think that I did a good job of keeping the tempo up in upbeat songs such as Vesuvius, Shepherd's Hey, and Florentiner. I think that I could improve on my articulations the most. There were a couple "circle spots" in Shepherd's Hey that I had trouble hitting on a consistent basis, despite my practice. I will try to do more "dee-dit-doo-dat" exercises and more of our scale exercises in order to improve on this. Overall, I think that we did a great job at the concert!

  10. I think I contributed to the band the most with m,y tone. An example of this is in Ireland: Legend and Lore. The opening drone on trombone (a d) is essential to building the intonation and chord structure throughout the band. My tone helped set the tonic (1st note) of the chord. Another example of how my tone helped the band was in florentiener in the triplet section, I have the opportunity to play with the tubas on the 1st and 3rd beat of the messure setting the stage for the woodwinds to take the melody. Each note was pivotal ti keeping the tone and tempo. Speaking of tempo one area I would like us to improve of was the tempo, specifically the retardando in florentiener needed work. One way that I can help contribute to the band in the area of tempo is to look up, this involves two components, one being to mark my music when I need to look up and the outer is to simply move my stand In a way that I can see the conductor and music clearly. Secondly I can help the band in the area of tempo by lissioning to the other components of the band to line up my tempo with others.

  11. I think that I did well in both technique and rhythm. On Shepard's Hey I played tympani pretty well, and my tom technique was great.

I could improve by talking to my private teacher about how to play the parts better. I could also read into the music more and pay attention to the changes occurring throughout it.

    1. The tympani was beautiful throughout, great work! It really adds a wonderful element to the entire band.

  12. Oh man okay I don't know how to change my name to Madeline Rodbourne but hey that's me aight. In Vesuvius, at 217, it really improved my technique. It's a fast part, with quick slide movement. I contributed to that song by working it very slowly and speeding it up. It was fantastic when I could play it fast. I also contributed during Florentiner. It was a really good work on intonation during the Trio. The trombones had to use good intonation at a quiet volume. That contributed a lot.
I need to improve on musicianship. Specifically, in Irish Tune From County Derry, I tend to swell each of my notes. I find this is very common when I'm playing slower pieces, so I need to work on that for the next performance. My private teacher and I have been working on that a lot. I will focus on intonation and steady air. When I practice, I should hold each note until it's steady and not swelling.

  13. I most contributed to this concert through my tone. I tired really hard to achieve a good, solid tone in Irish tune, and I tried to blend in with my fellow 3rd clarinets in Vesuvius. An area that I need to work on is technique. I can improve my technique by really digging in on concert music, and analyzing what would be the best way for execution. ( This includes marking lefts and rights, which is a huge part of clarinet technique).

  14. Our concert went really well! Leaving me with goosebumps in Irish tune. I think that I contributed to the performance by using good sound and intonation. I feel like I could work on my technique some more for the next performance. Through my PLP I have been working on scales. I believe that will help my technique because it makes me more comfortable with notes and range. Which, overall will make me more confident in pieces that involve a need of a higher level of technique and range.

    1. Irish Tune left me with Goosebumps too. The collapsed triangle was great. Super proud of you overcoming adversity with the issues with your Bassoon before the concert. You rock!

  15. I think I contributed most in tone. This concert we had many song that showed off the tone of the instruments which was amazing. Like in Irish tune, it is so musical and beautiful and capture the sounds of the instrument so perfectly which made it so hard not to give the song the best tone possible. There were also more challenging and faster songs like Vesuvius, which required a good tone in order to play it as well as we did. I felt that i did really well in making the low notes in that piece sound very full which is quite hard to do on a flute. Areas i need to improve on are fast fingerings. I plan to do better by working on it for my PLP. I have been doing my scales faster and trying to execute etudes at a fast speed with little error. Over all i though we had an amazing concert.

  16. I feel like I contributed the most to this concert by paying attention to the style of the music, i.e. the dynamics, accents, etc. For example, in Irish Tune, I focused a lot on the dynamic contrast and not playing too loudly when other sections were featured. Also, in the trio for Florentiner, I tried playing as flowingly as possible, because that matched the style of the music. For the next concert, I would like to improve on my overall musicianship, especially quick fingerings and playing high notes nicely. To achieve this, I can choose other pieces to work on that have a lot of difficult techniques. I can also work with my private lesson teacher to see how I can manage my air more to sound better while playing.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I also have trouble getting high notes to sound good. I find that it helps if you use a lot of air and keep the E flat/G# key on the right hand held down. Great Work!

      Delete
    2. I also want to work on fast fingerings and high notes as Vesuvius required a lot of this. I think that's a really a good idea of working with your private teacher to work on your air. I think you did a great job in the concert!

  17. I feel that I most contributed to this concert in counting/rhythmic accuracy (especially in Vesuvius). I worked really hard to prepare this piece, because when it was first handed out I could barely play it. The third clarinet part that I had had a lot of syncopated rhythms that, if not counted, would be played during times that were supposed to be all silent. This piece pushed me and ultimately made me a better counter and clarinetist.
To improve for the next concert, I want to improve the use of chromatic fingerings in real music. I'm getting pretty good at them in the chromatic scales, but I often find myself reverting back to the regular ones in concert music. I will continue to work on this for the future!
Overall, I thought this was a really great concert. I feel that everyone worked hard to learn the music and the outcome was amazing :) Nice job everyone!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Also I forgot to include how I plan to improve!
1 - Still get better with the speed and practicing the chromatic scale.
2 - Practice more etude/songs that implement these fingerings, and strive to use them. Don't settle for only using some of them!

  18. During our concert I feel like I contributed the most to our pieces in rhythm. I really struggled to play as fast as we need to in songs like Shepherds Hey and Vesuvius, so figuring it out by the concert and playing right was really exciting. I used to not like Shepherds Hey, and then when I figured out the rhythms and tempo that was difficult for me, it became one of my favorites. I need to improve my tone for songs like Irish Tune from County Derry, when Trombones got the melody, which doesn't happen very often. While I don't feel my tone was that bad during the concert, I know for the next concert my tone needs to improve. I can improve this by getting better at controlling my breathing, through our warm-ups and marking where to breath in pieces, as well as practicing bending my pitches while working with the tuner, improving my ear for when I am sharp and flat.

  19. I feel like I most contributed to our performance through musicianship. I was able to really emphasis this in Irish Tune, as it provided ample opportunity to express emotion with its abundance of long notes. I focused on letting some notes grow and expand the space with sound, while allowing others to gradually fade away. Shepard's Hey was also a piece in which I practiced musicianship, as I added style and musicality through emphasizing articulation, particularly the light and bouncy staccatos. I would like to improve on technique. Some ways I could do this include playing the class music along with Smart Music. Also, I could drill scales.

    1. Good idea to use Smart Music to help with your goal! You have great musicianship and style already! And I really like your rhyming username.

  20. For the concert, the areas I contributed the most to was technique and musicianship. Shepherd's Hey was my most technically challenging piece as it forced me to play sixteenth notes that usually aren't assigned for lower instruments. By practicing the part regularly, I was able to play the notes accurately with the correct tonguing. Along with technique, I believed I also contributed to the band with my musicianship. I focussed on blending with the band and breathing during the right time. I emphasized phrasing and changing my dynamics to emphasize notes and make the music sound more dramatic. During Irish County Tune, Mr. Richter emphasized the importance of breathing together and remembering dynamics. During the second half of the song, I am only the low wood wind playing with the clarinets so I made sure I blended with them and provided a strong base with great dynamics. During all the songs of the concert, I tried my best to listen across the band and balance. Overall, I thought my concert performance was good and I think the band did an amazing job!

    4. good job with those though sixteenth notes, at first early in learning the piece they were looking kinda rough, but in the end they really turned out well.

  21. I thought that I improved my musicianship in Irish Tune from County Derry and my rhythm in Vesuvius. In Irish Tune I worked very hard to achieve a musical quality because I hold a lot of long notes that are very boring if they are just played straightly. In Vesuvius it was important that my articulation be accurate because some of the rhythms sound mucky without proper articulation. I would most like to improve my rhythm before the next concert because that was an area I struggled with. To do this I will practice slowly with a metronome so I can be certain of the rhythms. I would also like to improve my tone, especially in the higher registers. To do this I will talk with my lesson teacher about range extension.

    1. Yes I thought the baritones were very expressive and had good tone in Irish Tune from County Derry!

  22. I feel like I contributed most with rhythm in this concert. For Ireland, playing the bodran was rhythmically challenging for me, as I had to pretty much drive some of the sections, which is something that is a bit difficult still for me. Also, Vesuvius, as we all know, had weird ways of counting easy time signatures, making the piece challenging for everyone. To be able to handle the variety of rhythms that Mr. Richter could throw at me, I plan to work with my private teacher and work on my own with my own instruments to get better at rhythms.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I guess you contributed Jake.. Just kidding! The bodran sounded fantastic and I know you worked really hard on that rhythm. *virtual high five*

    3. Great work! Continue to learn the challenging rhythms and help out the rest of the band after you have done so.

  23. During the concert, I contributed most with my dynamics. With this selection of pieces, I made a very conscious effort to find the circle spots relating to dynamics that Mr. Richter pointed out and made sure that I really played those well to contribute to the piece. In addition to dynamics, I also make sure to get the kinks out of all of the other circle spots before the concert to make them stronger. I think that I can work on being more in tune with my tone because I think that I become less aware of it when playing forte sections that also include hard rhythms like the jig in Ireland. To improve this, I can practice in a quite room and practice focusing on tone instead of rhythm for some of my practices. I think that I can also improve by practicing with my private teacher and listen to her professional tone in contrast to mine for those sections.

  24. I think I contributed the most in terms of balance and blend/featuring the melody. During Ireland: Legend and Lore, I did not hold the high D because I knew it would hinder the sound of the saxophone. I also tried to play very quietly when we played the second time at B during Florentiner. I think I have the most room to grow in terms of technique. I could practice my scales in order to improve this. I could also work more on etudes.

  25. I think that I most contributed to this concert with my intonation. I've been working a lot on supporting my sound with more air. In Vesuvius there was a part where the clarinets were very exposed and I think that my sound sounded full. Also, in Irish Tune I had a full and focused sound. I think that I could most improve on my technical skills. Some of the songs were really fast and I struggled sometimes to tongue the notes fast enough. To improve on this I will play scales, tonguing each note at a certain tempo and as I improve I will increase the tempo. I will also talk to my private teacher about ways to improve my tonguing speed.

  27. An area I think that I contributed the most for this concert would be musicianship. I showed this during the trio in Florentiner and the in one section of Vesuvius. A place I hope to improve for next concert would be technicality because in some parts in Shepard's Hey and Florentiner I struggled. To do this I want to work on my major and chromatic scales and doing them at a reasonably fast speed. Also, my solo for solo and ensemble has some technical parts that will help me improve in that area. For resources I hope to use my private teacher.

    1. I can relate to struggling with technicality as I also struggled with fast complicated rhythms. I think we could both benefit from slowing down the phrase, getting the notes down, and then speeding it back up. 28. I feel like I contributed most to the concert by working on balance in Ireland and on intonation in Irish tune. In Ireland I tried to play very quietly on very high long notes that the entire flute section held. In Irish tune, I focused on the ending note and making sure to keep my flute level until the end so it didn't end up flat. I would like to work on technique next concert by practicing articulations on challenging rhythms. I plan to do this by working on short etudes that would help me achieve this goal. This will help me improve both my rhythm and articulations as well as musicality. I plan to talk to my private lesson teacher to achieve these goals. Great job on the concert everyone!

I also contributed during Vesuvius during the 9/8 measures. For the next concert, I need to practice my tone.. I plan on getting better at tuning of these by practicing with a tuner.

    1. Tuning is an awesome way to work on tone! I suggest you just go note by note so you know the tendency for each note and the whole song can be in tune!

  30. I think that I contributed most to the band this concert with my intonation and tone. This is especially seen in the slower parts of Vesuvius and Irish tune. I have been working so hard to achieve good tone on the flute, especially because nothing is worse than ruining a song with an out of tune flute! My private teacher and I have been doing exercises for warm up that help me a lot with this.

I would like to improve even more on my technique, especially articulations. Especially with the flute, it is more difficult to play notes very short. I will achieve this goal by playing my scales before practicing staccato, and I will also consult my private teacher for help in case she has any techniques to use. I think that by achieving this, I will be able to bring even more to the songs, especially for next concert!

  32. I felt that I contributed most in the musicianship I brought to the pieces. I worked hard to listen to other sections and know when to play out and when not to. I also worked on interpreting certain lines to achieve the right style. For example, in Irish Tune I made sure to play with a flowing style and connect the notes. On the other hand in Florentiner I played short and disconnected to achieve a march-like sound. I want to work on rhythm accuracy as sometimes I don't feel comfortable playing fast, complicated rhythms. I can achieve this goal by slowing down the rhythm to get the notes down and then speeding it up to the right tempo. Overall, I thought our concert went really well!

  33. I feel I contributed with my intonation. I really focused on intonation in Irish tune. Also, during Florentiner when the trombones had the melody with the notes jumping around in wide ranges.
I feel I need to improve my musicianship. I find I talk a lot when I don't have to play or when the other band was playing. I will improve this by encouraging the people around me not to talk so I wont be tempted. Also, I will sit by people who I think will be a good example and who won't tempt me.

  34. I feel that most contributed to our performance through technique and interpretation. There were some tricky areas in Vesuvius and Shepard's Hey that I worked really hard on. Also in Vesuvius, I made sure to bring out the story of Mt. Vesuvius (that was my favorite song!). My goal is to work on being able to play fast rhythms (and also tongue fast). I will do this by practicing scales and gradually increasing the tempo, and also pay attention to this specifically in class.

  35. I think I contributed the most with rhythm. I think this because I am a percussionist and I do a lot of rhythms. In Florentiner I played the snare and there were lots of rhythms and it helped keep the band together. Also in vesuvius my temple blocks help accent and highlight certain parts with its rhythm. The area id like the most growth is in technique. To achieve this I can watch youtube videos about technique and learn better technique. I can also travel the world for years on a treacherous journey of body and mind until I find the technique shaman upon a mountain in eastern Asia who will then train me in his sacred ways to become a technique master shaman warrior as he himself is.

  36. I think I contributed most to the band with balance and blend. For Irish Tune, I matched the articulations and intonation of my section and also the band. This helped the band blend and sound stronger. Secondly, for Irish Tune I worked to blend and balance my sound with my section during the melody. I feel I could improve on my tone and making sure I am playing confidently and strong while maintaining good tone. I am going to practice my tone with my private teacher in practicing playing high notes (where I feel I struggle with tone the most) while also playing strong.

  37. I contributed to the concert and band by working hard on intonation and tuning. I worked very hard with a tuner and long tones to make sure that each note had purpose. Looking at each note and seeing how it fit into a phrase make songs sound full, especially in Irish Tune.
For next concert I want to work on technique. I want to make sure that every part of a piece is down flat and I am not iffy about any parts of the music. It is important that after dynamics and rhythm and other basics are worked out, you need to add musicality, which makes music what music is!
This concert during Irish Tune at measure 57 where the horns hit a high G, I worked hard to keep that in tune. I listened the that part so I could hear in my head where the note lies. In Ireland: Legend and Lore, at the battle scene, the horns went between high G and D, moving all over the place inside the horn, and I also listened to that part so I could here the intervals in between each note.
For next concert I plan to work on technique. Specifically quick reactions to notes and range. For faster fingers I plan to take specific, small parts of the music and work it out over and over again. Practice makes permanent so I want to make sure that I can get it down quickly and easily so I don't keep doing it wrong in class. For range I want to keep doing long notes and lips slurs so I can reach notes from all ranges. If I am strong in the extreme ranges, I'll be even stronger in "normal" playing range. I feel like the stronger we individually can become, it will help us as a band grow.
The most important part of band is working together and I believe that we all need to grow into working as a team, and play as one.

    1. So true! I like your goal to practice small parts of the music to become more precise - but especially if it is a combination of fast fingering and range, practicing the same bit over and over can be really tiring, so you might want to consider doing just the fingering (without playing the notes) and once you have started to get comfortable with that, actually playing. I've found this works pretty well when I have fast sixteenth notes that I need precision in both tonguing and fingering.

  38. I think I contributed to the concert with my musicianship. I knew when I needed to back off when I wasn’t the melody or when there were too many flutes playing. I think that my crescendos and decrescendos were my strong points throughout the concert and also that I was able to blend in. For example, in Florentiner March, I knew that when we played something a second time it wasn’t the melody. Also, in Vesuvius, I backed off when we had too many flutes playing one note when we needed to be piano.
An area that I think I need to work on is my articulations. The best thing for me to do is practice our scale exercises at different tempos until I am proficient at staccatos at a faster tempo.

    1. It's awesome that you know when to back off or not play at all when it seems overpowering, it's a good skill to have and will end up benefiting the whole band because of it. Rock on with those strong skills, and work on those skills that maybe aren't so strong!

  39. I feel that I contributed most to this performance through musicianship. In Irish Tune this was a huge part of the piece and I did my best to shape each line to follow the music and breathe as one band in the correct spots. I also showed musicianship in the slow syncopated background section of Vesuvius. I think that once we got this rhythm down working really hard to shape it and fit it in with the rest of the lines enhanced this piece. Next concert I would like to work on rhythm. I can do this by working with my private lesson teacher and focusing on this goal and sight reading different etudes.

  40. I think the area i provided the most in the concert was balance. After the 30 minute session with the Gustavus director of bands and his critique on our dynamics in the piece Vesuvius, we played too loud too early, so i and others in my section played softer at times where earlier in the year we would have blasted way too loud. Also during the woodwind jig we as a section had to greatly restrain ourselves in order for their rhythm to come out. The area of growth most important to me is musicianship, in order to improve myself in this area if music, i will participate in the solo competition to work on a piece outside of a big band setting, also i will focus on the musicianship of our small ensembles more. - Noah Oehlke

  41. I think that I contributed most by my articulation of notes. In Florentiner, I made sure to play it in a "bouncy" short march style and payed attention to accents and staccatos. In Irish Tune I played very legato and connected and payed attention to where slur phrases begin and end to know which notes to articulate and which ones to slur.

I need to improve in sustaining high notes, because it's hard to have a full and open sound when you have to go up really high. Florentiner really challenged me with high notes because I continually played in the upper register and my lips got extremely tired about half way through the song and I'd have to take occasional breaks to regain composure before playing again. In Irish tune, hitting the high B was always a challenge and depending on the state of my lips that day I could hit it some days and others it was a struggle to make it come out and sound good but during the concert I hit it and it sounded good. I talked to my private teacher on how to increase my range and he assigned me exercises which focus on stretching range and I've been practicing them extensively.

  42. I feel that my musicianship was best displayed during Vesuvius and Ireland. In Vesuvius, the part was copied for three people, but the copy was cut off and missing a few pages, so I had to play from memory, and I'm rather confident that I did well despite that. In Ireland, I listened to the other members of the band and tried to play alongside them, being heard when I need to be and supporting when I wasn't the center of the music. I could always work on technique, since that's a constant struggle in the life of a percussionist. I will choose more four mallet pieces to play in my personal time, and I will try to play outside of what's specifically written on the page.

  43. I think I contributed most by my musicality. I tried to play with good dynamics, blending, and style for each of the pieces. In Irish Tune, I played quietly under the melody with dynamics. During the slow section of Vesuvius, I tried to play with expression and dynamics. I still have a lot of work to do with my musicianship, but I feel like I've been improving. I want to work on my technique. I got most of the rhythms and notes, but not as accurately as I could be. To improve on this I can practice sight reading -- online, ffsp, etc.

  44. I think I contributed most with my tone. I played with great air support and tried to consciously play in tune. This was evident in Ireland during my solo, and during Vesuvius in the beginning when I had to play the entrance with Kevin (Tenor Sax). However, I think I could improve my ability to pay attention to whom to feature during the pieces, I believe by playing quietly more often I can find who is the melody and thus whom I should be featuring at various times in our songs.

  45. I think our concert went very well! I think I contributed most in Shepard's Hey in the first few measures because I did all the articulations written and I also practiced this part a lot. Also, I did most of the dynamics in Vesuvius and I think the dynamics really shaped the song well. Two things I need to work on are tone and when playing in front of a lot of people. For when I work on tone I will do long tone practices to warm up before my lessons and when I practice. Secondly, I ill ask people from time to time to listen in on what I am working on for future performances and I will play what I know for them.

  46. I think we had a pretty good concert overall, and we sounded good as a band. I feel like I contributed to a good concert by having good rhythm and musicianship too. In Vesuvius I feel like I had good rhythm with the tom part, and also the xylophone part in Shepherd's hey too. I feel like i had the most musicianship during Ireland because we had 3 people playing one part and I had to listen to them and try blending with them. Also during Ireland I had to play rhythms and be in time signatures that I was not use too, I overcame these problems with practice and hard work. I feel like I need to work on technique, and being a quad player over the last 2 years I have gained bad technique because of a different style of playing. I will work hard on gain back the right technique by using my drum pad at home and picking different pieces to work on to also gain more skill as well.

  47. I think i contributed the most to the band's musicianship and style. In Irish Tune, I made sure to exaggerate dynamics and emphasize phrasing in the very lyrical melody. Also, In Vesuvius, I made sure to play with contrast between the different styles by changing my articulation, and knowing when to back off to feature other new parts.
Before the next concert, I would like to work on intonation. I will practice this in two ways. First, I will practice my music with a tuner, so I can learn my tendencies for certain notes and make sure to adjust. Additionally, I will not only listen more carefully to other players in my section, but I will try harder to listen to the whole band. I will listen down to the tubas more intently and make sure to always be adjusting to the whole band's pitch center.

  48. I feel like I most contributed to our performance through my tone. I feel like i worked a lot on tone and on making my notes sound good. One example of this is during the song Irish Tune, I had many very low notes that I had to play and I had to try and play them with out taking many breaths in between. This proved to be very challenging, especially trying to make my low notes sound good, but over time I feel like I did a good job improving the tone in those low notes. Also, in Florentiner March, I played short quarter notes the whole time, but I feel like I did a good job making those quarter notes sound good. Before our next concert, I would like to improve on my musicianship. To do this I will practice sight reading more. Also, when playing, I will try and focus more on how I am playing instead of only focusing on what I am playing.

  49. I think I contributed the most to the bands tone. During the trio section of Florentiner March it was important for me to play my part quiet, but with a strong tone. It was also important for me to play with a good tone during Irish Tune. I was able to play these parts and the rest of my music with a full, strong tone that help contribute to the great sound of our band.
Although my musicianship did improve while playing Irish Tune I know it can still get better. In order to make this happen I'm going to work to play our warm up and new music with attitude. Im also going to continue working on my intonation which I believe will help lead to better musicianship.
Overall I thought the concert went really well and I heard lots of good feedback from some of the people who were there.

  50. Ivy B. here. I felt I contributed to the balance of the band. I took more risks this concert with playing strongly- usually the french horn part is not considered all that significant, so we don't always play forte or fortissimo, but this time I think we all upped the dynamic levels and listening to the concert today I have to say we all made the right decision there. Later, I was the only one with the fourth horn part in Vesuvius with 3 third horns and I really tried to bring out the parts I had that were unique. I do feel that I could do better in terms of musicianship. First, I would like to be more organized, punctual, and well-informed for the next concert (this was partially affected by my absence due to the choir tour, so I wasn't there for some important information). I didn't really know the order of the songs and had to ask others, and I felt badly about talking to them when I knew the director or other students were addressing the audience. Additionally, I could probably try to be more professional while watching the other band play- not talking, cheering respectfully without being overexcited, etc.

  51. Emily DING-DING-DING!!! I liked this concert a lot because I think we definitely improved our control. Though it still may be too loud our dynamic contrasts were better and allowed for more dramatic music that the audience liked a lo [i can't put what I'll do at the end because of my stupid ipad so to work on rhythm I would practice with a metronome more and work on the piece both slow and fast so I'm not just playing what I think it should sound like but because I know it is how it goes, back to post!!!]t. I focused more on my dynamics to, not just what was written on the page but
following the flow the other musicians did and playing out when I was supposed too. Usually you do not hear the percussion but this time we were a focal point especially with Ireland and Vesuvius. I would like to be better at Rutherford, I do not have a very good internal pulse that I want to work on and listening to the band more to know who to feature with tthe mel

Overall, I was pleased with our concert! I was nervous that we weren't well prepared for Sheperds Hey, but I was wrong. Something we did well as a whole band was blending together. It sounded like one band, not two bands combining together for the first time.
As an individual, I feel like I contributes most to this concert correct tone, dynamics, and note accuracy. I was very happy with my solo in Vesuvius, I had a little difficulty at the beginning while learning, but it got better.
Something I could work on would be counting. It's harder to count 9/8, 5/4, time signatures like that during rests and I want to work on that.

In my opinion the concert went very well. Our sound blended nicely. I contributed to rhythm the most. In Shepherds Hay I played measure 70 right. Also in Vesuvius I nailed the rhythms that just the bass clarinets play. To make sure I played them right I focused really hard on counting and came in at the right time. An area I would most like to improve by next concert is dynamics. Two ways I can improve my dynamics are by practicing playing more musically and overplaying the crescendos and decrescendos. I will work on this to make our next concert as good as possible.

  54. The concert as a whole went very well. I contributed the most in listening across the band and protecting the melody. In Vesuvius I listened to other parts in the band to help make the right entrances in the piece. In Irish Tune I was a lower part so I made sure I was providing the heavy sounds, and let the higher more melodic sounds be heard. An area I would like to improve on is technique. Two ways I improve this is by practicing concert music at home and taking it slow and work my way up to tempo to full accuracy.

  55. In terms of my contribution to our performance, I felt like I focused a lot on intonation. Throughout this period of learning these pieces, our band has focused a lot on protecting the triangle and listening to others around us. For example, in the beginning of Ireland: Of Legend and Lore the first clarinets had a high A for at least 12 counts, that had to be in tune. Also in the same piece, a transition from an A to a D had to be in tune because the rest of the band was singing the note we were playing. The area where I would like to make the most growth before our next performance would be technique. Especially in pieces that I have to be able to double tongue to have clear articulation, I need to focus on that area. I plan on practicing this by tonguing rhythms at an appropriate tempo and then increasing the tempo as I improve. I can also focus on learning alternative fingerings and trill so transitions from notes are smoother.

  56. I think that overall as a band, we did very well with the issues that presented us: tone, articulation, and rhythm. As a single player I believe that I did a good job working on articulation and tone which for me was the most work I needed for vesuvius. If I had to choose one it would have to be articulation, since our concert was pretty heavy, at least for a horn, in that sort of subject. Next concert I will hopefully improve the worst quality I have; bad tone. It was hard to keep a good tone near the end when my chops were spent. I believe that if I would have continued to work on it I could have found a better way to conserve my tone. For the next concert I will spend more time outside the class with my teacher to work on those pieces specifically to my part. Hopefully after that I will be able to present my tone.
